She bought the house because the schools were good and the commute to Asheville was manageable. She didn't think much about the climate. Fletcher felt moderate — not as high as the mountains to the north and east, not as low as Hendersonville. Somewhere in between.
Her first full summer in the house, the system ran constantly and the upstairs bedroom never got below 78 in the afternoon. She called us. We found a system that was undersized for the load and a duct run to the second floor that was too restrictive to move adequate air. Both issues were correctable. The second summer was different. She stopped thinking about the upstairs bedroom.
Fletcher occupies the southern end of Buncombe County, pressed up against the Henderson County line along the I-26 corridor. It doesn't feel like a mountain town — there's the airport, commercial strips, newer subdivisions, big-box retail. But the terrain still does what WNC terrain does: it varies. Properties along the I-26 corridor sit in a relatively flat transitional zone, while homes east of the highway climb toward the ridges at the Buncombe-Henderson boundary, and properties to the west drop toward the French Broad drainage.
That variation matters for HVAC. The flat corridor homes near the airport have different load profiles than ridge homes a mile to the east. Wind patterns along the airport perimeter can affect equipment placement and performance in ways that wouldn't apply a mile away. Homes at the Henderson County boundary sit in a transitional climate zone where winter temperatures are slightly milder than northern Buncombe but summer humidity from the lower-elevation drainage can be more persistent.
The housing stock in Fletcher spans several decades. Established neighborhoods along Howard Gap Road and near the Cane Creek area include homes from the 1970s and 1980s — mostly ranch-style, with duct systems of the era. Newer subdivisions that have developed over the last twenty years have modern construction but sometimes inconsistent HVAC quality depending on who installed the original systems. We've been in newer Fletcher homes where the equipment was adequate but the ductwork was clearly rushed — inadequate return air, supply registers in wrong locations, static pressure problems.
The transitional climate position of Fletcher — between the higher elevations of Buncombe and the lower elevations of Henderson — means that system selection deserves some attention. A system optimized for Asheville conditions and a system optimized for Hendersonville conditions will perform differently in Fletcher, particularly at the seasonal margins. Balance point matters.

Fletcher sits on the Buncombe–Henderson county line with level to gently rolling terrain along the French Broad River and Cane Creek corridors. The Asheville Regional Airport is adjacent. The broad valley floor with agricultural land creates an open, low-elevation setting — one of the warmest and most moderate microclimates in the metro area.
Fletcher's climate is nearly identical to the Asheville airport weather station because the station is literally next door. This is one of the few towns where Asheville climate data is actually accurate for HVAC sizing. The open terrain and lower elevation make Fletcher one of the warmer spots in the service area — lower heating costs but slightly higher cooling demand than mountain towns.
