Ductless Mini-Split Installation

Samsung ductless mini-splits deliver targeted comfort to any room in your home — without tearing open walls to run ductwork.

Many homes in the Asheville area were built before central ductwork was standard. Others have additions, finished attics, converted garages, or sunrooms that the original HVAC system was never designed to reach. In these situations, a ductless mini-split system is often the smartest solution — it provides both cooling and heating from a single system, installs in a day, and requires only a small hole through the exterior wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units.

Fair Air Heating & Cooling partners with Samsung for our ductless installations. Samsung mini-splits are engineered for quiet operation, precise temperature control, and long-term durability. Their inverter-driven compressors adjust output continuously rather than cycling on and off, which translates to lower energy bills and more consistent comfort. We have installed Samsung systems across Western North Carolina in everything from 1920s bungalows in Montford to brand-new builds in Black Mountain, and they perform reliably year after year.

How they work

One Outdoor Unit, Multiple Indoor Heads

A ductless mini-split system consists of a compact outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air-handling units (often called “heads”). The two are connected by a thin conduit that carries refrigerant lines, a condensate drain, and power wiring. Because there are no ducts involved, you avoid the energy losses that occur when conditioned air travels through long duct runs — losses that can account for 25% or more of a central system's output, especially in older homes with uninsulated ductwork in crawl spaces or attics.

In heating mode, the system works as a heat pump, extracting heat from the outdoor air and moving it inside. Samsung's units are rated for effective heating performance down to low outdoor temperatures, making them well suited for Asheville's mountain winters. In cooling mode, the process reverses: heat is pulled from the indoor air and expelled outdoors, just like a traditional air conditioner.

Zone control is one of the biggest advantages. Each indoor head operates independently with its own thermostat and remote control. You can keep the living room at 72°F, the bedroom at 68°F, and turn off the unit in the guest room entirely. You are only conditioning the spaces you are actually using, which reduces energy waste significantly.

Ideal Applications

  • Home additions and sunrooms — New rooms that your existing system cannot reach without expensive duct extensions.
  • Older homes without ductwork — Many historic Asheville homes rely on radiators or baseboard heat with no ducts at all. A mini-split adds cooling and supplemental heating without a major renovation.
  • Converted garages and finished attics — Spaces that were not part of the original conditioned footprint often have no duct access. A single wall-mounted head solves the problem completely.
  • Supplemental comfort — A room that is always too hot in summer or too cold in winter, even though the central system is running. A mini-split addresses the problem at the source.

Efficiency & installation

Energy Savings Without Major Renovation

Because mini-splits eliminate duct losses and use inverter technology to modulate compressor speed, they are among the most energy-efficient HVAC options available. Many Samsung models carry SEER2 ratings well above 20, and they qualify for various energy efficiency rebates and incentives. For homeowners looking to reduce their carbon footprint and lower monthly utility bills, a ductless system is a strong choice.

Installation is minimally invasive. We mount the indoor unit on the wall (or ceiling, depending on the model and your preference), place the outdoor unit on a pad or mounting bracket outside, and connect the two through a 3-inch opening in the exterior wall. There is no tearing into ceilings, no running ductwork through closets, and no multi-day construction project. Most single-zone installations are completed in one day. Multi-zone systems — where one outdoor unit serves two, three, or four indoor heads throughout the house — may take a second day depending on the layout.

We handle everything from sizing the system to securing any necessary permits. If you are curious whether a mini-split or a ducted heat pump system makes more sense for your situation, we are happy to walk you through both options during a free in-home estimate. For homeowners who also want to address indoor air quality, Samsung units include built-in filtration that captures dust, allergens, and airborne particles as the system operates.
