YOU CAN TRUST

Fair Air Heating & Cooling — Asheville's local HVAC team since 2018.

Central AC Installation

A properly sized, professionally installed central air conditioning system is the most effective way to cool your entire Asheville home evenly and efficiently.

Asheville's summers bring sustained heat and humidity that push older or undersized systems past their limits. When outdoor temperatures climb into the upper 80s and 90s and the humidity refuses to break, your air conditioner has to work harder and longer to maintain a comfortable temperature indoors. If your system is more than 12–15 years old, struggles to keep up on the hottest days, or requires increasingly frequent repairs, it may be time to consider a new installation rather than pouring more money into a unit that's approaching the end of its useful life.

Fair Air Heating & Cooling installs Trane central air conditioning systems because they consistently deliver the reliability, efficiency, and longevity that Western North Carolina homeowners need. Every installation starts with a thorough assessment of your home so the system we recommend is the right one — not just the most expensive or the cheapest, but the one that actually matches your home's requirements. If you are also exploring options that provide both cooling and heating from a single unit, a heat pump system may be worth considering as well.

Why sizing matters

Proper Sizing & SEER Ratings

An air conditioner that is too small for your home will run constantly without ever reaching the set temperature, driving up energy bills and wearing out components years ahead of schedule. One that is too large will short-cycle — turning on and off rapidly — which leaves humidity in the air, creates uneven temperatures from room to room, and puts unnecessary strain on the compressor.

We calculate the correct system size using a Manual J load calculation that accounts for your home's square footage, insulation levels, window placement and size, sun exposure throughout the day, ceiling heights, and the number of occupants. In the Asheville area, factors like elevation, tree canopy, and the orientation of your home on the lot can all influence the load. We take all of it into account.

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures how efficiently a system converts electricity into cooling over an entire season. The current federal minimum is SEER2 15 for our region, but higher-efficiency Trane models reach SEER2 ratings of 20 or above. A higher SEER rating means lower monthly utility costs, and the difference adds up fast over a system's 15–20 year lifespan. We help you weigh the upfront cost against long-term savings so you can make an informed decision.

Every Trane system we install comes with a manufacturer warranty, and Fair Air stands behind our installation workmanship. We also offer annual maintenance plans to keep your new system performing at peak efficiency for years to come.

Installation day

What to Expect on Install Day

Most central AC installations are completed in a single day. Our crew arrives in the morning with all equipment and materials, and you have cool air flowing by the afternoon. Here is how the process works:

  • Pre-installation walkthrough — We confirm equipment placement, review the work plan, and answer any last questions before we start.
  • Old system removal — We disconnect and remove your existing equipment, disposing of refrigerant according to EPA regulations.
  • New system installation — The outdoor condenser and indoor evaporator coil are installed, refrigerant lines are connected, and electrical wiring is completed to code.
  • Testing and commissioning — We verify refrigerant charge, airflow, thermostat operation, and temperature differential to make sure everything is running exactly as designed.
  • Cleanup and walkthrough — We clean up the work area, walk you through your new system's thermostat and filter location, and make sure you are completely comfortable before we leave.

Pricing is always provided upfront before any work begins. There are no surprise charges and no add-ons at the end of the day. The number we quote is the number you pay.

If you are not sure whether your current system needs to be replaced or just repaired, we are happy to evaluate it honestly. Sometimes a repair is the right call, and we will tell you that. When replacement makes more sense — because the repair cost approaches 50% of a new system, or the unit uses R-22 refrigerant that is no longer manufactured — we will explain exactly why and give you options.
