
Winter Emergency. Rearranged Schedule. No Premium.
The kid was wrapped in a blanket on the couch watching cartoons when we arrived. The tablet was propped against a pillow, the volume low, and she didn't look up when we came in. She had a blanket pulled up to her chin and she was doing fine, the way kids do when they've adapted to a situation their parents are panicking about.
Heat running. House at temperature by noon.
The inside temperature was 48 degrees when we got the call. January, a morning where the overnight low had been well below freezing and hadn't climbed much by 7am. The mother had called her landlord, called her usual HVAC company, called her sister. By the time she called us she'd been at it for an hour and hadn't gotten anyone who could come that day.
We rearranged the morning. We had two scheduled calls — both homeowners understood when we explained. One of them said "please go, obviously."
The thermostat said the furnace was running. That was the maddening thing — from where she stood, looking at the thermostat, everything looked operational. The display said the heat was on. The fan was running. Air was moving through the vents. It just wasn't warm.
A tripped circuit had reset the furnace control board incorrectly. Not a blown fuse, not a total failure — a partial reset that left the board in a state where it was signaling the fan to run but wasn't completing the ignition sequence. The fan moved air. The burners never lit. Warm air from a cold heat exchanger: 68 degrees at the register, approximately, when it should have been 120.
We had the board on the truck. Control boards are model-specific enough that we don't always have the right one, but we'd gotten the model number from her when she called and we'd checked before we left.
Installed. Reset. Verified the ignition sequence through two complete cycles. The burner lit correctly. Heat exchanger temp climbed to operating range. Supply air at the registers climbed past 110 and kept rising.
She asked about the emergency rate before we gave her the total. We told her there wasn't one. Same rate as any other call.
No emergency premium. We rearranged the morning. That's the part that cost us nothing.
